FORESTRY AIDE – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT

(Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program).” The Forestry Aide reporting location is Fort Humboldt State Historic Park, 3431 Fort Ave, Eureka CA, 95503. This position will work under the supervision of the Senior Park and Recreation Specialist. The Forestry Aide will work under the lead of the Engineering Geologist assigned to the Service Driven program. Forestry Aides support the Service Driven and Resource Management Programs by assisting with the implementation of backcountry road restoration projects including but not limited to road removal, road reengineering, and road maintenance projects designed to restore watershed stability and ecosystem function. This position utilizes spreadsheet, word processing, publishing, and mapping software to generate and maintain geospatial data, reports, and graphics related to the projects planned. The individual will perform geological and hydrological investigations to aide in development of project plans and prescriptions for reducing slope instability, erosion, and sedimentation problems related to logging roads, skid trails, and landings and oversee implementation of heavy equipment operations to ensure quality control. Applicants should have the following qualities: Possess good communication, computer, and technical writing skills; be able to work well as an individual and in a multi-disciplinary team setting; and be able to work in a remote wildland setting under harsh environmental conditions including wind, rain, sun exposure, smoke, dust, stream channels, dense vegetation, and very steep slopes while carrying a pack with gear. Applicant must have excellent field orientation skills and basic familiarity with electronic geospatial data collection. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible. The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment. The position will require the employee to perform some minor strenuous labor (e.g. carrying up to 45 lbs) and to be able to navigate and hike up to five miles in coastal and forested environments. This may include working in very steep terrain, navigating through areas of thick brush, through standing and fallen timber, and under adverse weather conditions. The position may occasionally require overnight camping for up to 3 nights.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Work well as an individual and in a multi-disciplinary team setting. Be flexible and open-minded and be able to work under harsh environmental conditions (wind, rain, sun exposure, dense vegetation, very steep slopes, and day and night shifts). Familiarity with the use of hand tools such as shovels, Pulaski’s, and weed eaters. Chainsaw experience is preferred but training will be made available. Applicant should be able to identify flora and fauna of northern California. Applicant must have excellent field orientation skills and basic familiarity with electronic data collection (Collector/Avenza/ArcMap). May be required to camp out up to 3 nights per week and work on weekends. Individual will need to operate 4-wheel drive trucks, ATVs and UTVs (ATV/UTV certified preferred).
